Printer sharing in the home

After buying a new printer for use at home, I was looking around for an easy way to share it.

A little investigation of the Kidanet Alvarion router sitting in the house revealed a USB port. A few Google searches later, a manual with instructions on how to configure a printer to use the built-in USB print server

Brilliant. The wife and I can both use the printer without juggling cables!

Kidanet’s choice of client-side equipment continues to impress me: PoE, Wi-Fi, 4 ethernet ports and a USB print server wrapped into a nice little router that comes with your plan.

May the Twit be with you

I detest Twitter : I cannot understand the need to post an incessant stream of one-liners in the vain hope of:

  1. somehow capturing the story of your life; or
  2. “keeping in touch” with similarly occupied people

And as such I have avoided the temptation to sign up.

But I have seen the light … well, perhaps not. But I do agree that Twitter is the perfect platform for text commentary for sports.

And while I’m grudgingly acknowledging that Twitter might occasionally be useful, I might as well mention Foamee – the social, collective conscience of beer debt – which also uses Twitter as it’s interface

Bitmap to vector: salvaging poor quality logo art

VectorMagic is an online auto-tracer from Stanford University.

I hate manually re-tracing work, so this suits me … and the results seem to be very good.

First I threw it a copy of the family coat of arms (click for larger version):

Bitmap to vector

Very nice! Particularly visible on the motto at the bottom: smooth fonts again! Thank you!

VectorMagic also claims to be tweaked for translating photos to vector images, so I passed it a photo (click for larger version):

Again, a very passable rendition.

Infinitely scalable goodness. This one is going into the toolbox.
